AMATAS Foundation
Annual Report 2007/2008
The AMATAS Foundation was formally established in 2006 and exists separately to AMA Tasmania. The Foundation is capable of attracting funding, conducting charitable activities and managing public good activities that AMA Tasmania is unable to undertake.
The objects for which the Foundation is established are:
Vital or Essential Services
1. To relieve sickness by providing support of various kinds to disadvantaged and needy persons for life-saving medical services and treatment;
2. To be the owner of the AMA Medical History Museum and Archive;
3. To accept donations and bequests and to provide financial security for the long term custodianship of the AMA Medical History Museum and Archive;
4. To provide funding to disadvantaged students wishing to undertake medical training but unable to do so due to financial hardship;
5. To provide financial assistance to projects and activities approved or promoted by AMA Tasmania designed to enhance provision of existing medical services;
6. To give financial support to persons and bodies providing emergency medical assistance in the case of declared natural disasters within Australia or overseas.
Incidental Support Services
7. To assist in the development and promotion of the doctors health advisory service;
8. Provide funds for medical research projects approved by AMA Tasmania;
9. To provide a coordinated medical advice service to other not-for-profit organisations or to any government or governmental body or authority;
10. To promote and to assist the training of doctors in Tasmania through the support of education programs, scholarships, fellowship and other initiatives with financial support and expertise.
The Board is made up of Dr David Reid, Professor Haydn Walters, Dr Bryan Walpole, Dr Jim Cartledge and Mr Rod Cameron-Tucker. Mrs Clark is the Business Development Officer.
The AMA Medical History Collection is safely housed in Vaucluse Gardens. Discussions with the University to house elements of the collection in the new Menzies Centre are continuing. Ms Rosemary Cameron has expressed an interest in being the curator. In the meantime grant funding will be sought to employ a curator to rationalise the collection.
During the period the State Office has maintained the Doctors Health Advisory Service with the State Office being the point of first contact.
The Men’s Health Initiative (MISTA) is a joint initiative between the AMATAS Foundation, RACT and the Pharmacy Society of Australia to raise the profile of Tasmanian men’s health issues. MISTA has applied for Tasmanian Government funding to support a part time project officer. The employment of a part time project officer would allow other Grant applications to be developed and submitted for this and other Foundation activities.
As part of the 2008 AMA annual subscription renewal there is a box for making a donation to the Foundation. To date there have been two donations. The Foundation Board will raise the opportunity to donate, bequest etc with members.
The AMATAS Foundation Golf Day was a new initiative to raise on-going financial support. It was highly successful and Carmel is to be congratulated on her professionalism and enthusiasm in developing and delivering the inaugural event.
